imho it would be helpful if all or part of the submission part of the dmoz site were automated. shouldn't be too hard to pull info off the site. You plug in your site. A tool grabs info off your site and fills in the form. judging by google's webmaster tools there should be the ability to detect a website that gaming the system.

once all the forms are filled in, a human editor can come by and decide whether the site is worth adding to the system. Another tool could be used to make this process simple. The tool would be one that checked the new entry for variation against others in the same category.

With this kind of automation the pain of submission and review could be much reduced.

It must be a nightmare being a DMOZ editor, some catergories are swamped and others have few submissions and others have no editor so they are waiting for one of the more senior editors to drop by an clear some of the backlog.

Considering they are volunteers it seems a bit of a thankless task. The objective of being a quality web directory is a tough one to get right.

Hi Amit ,
If you read the post and the DMOZ guidelines, you would know that webmaster submissions are only one of the places we get sites to enlist website on the ODP . The categories where I edit does not have tremendous amount of submissions, but unique information is one of the factors I personally do take notice off , while adding sites.

Your post is good, but it is just repetition of what the DMOZ guidelines already suggest. It is very easy to write about it because you want to write an article. But the fact is that even if you have a very good informative website and you follow all the guidelines there is a very slim chance that the editor will recognize your site as worthy and list it in the directory. There are just too many submissions and I don't blame them they are unable to cope with it.

A perfectly sane idea Yossarian ,
however to note , this post or any similar is not exactly an endorsement or advert to get more people to submit to DMOZ , as already explained above .
It is only meant for those , who plan to submit ... it is a guide of what to do and what not to do .

Personally I don't find DMOZ worth it. I will submit a site but I am not going to cry if I don't get in. I'd sooner spend my time on developing decent content and finding easier / better links elsewhere.
